Originally a tourbillon was developed in the nineteenth century by Abraham-Louis Breguet to improve accuracy. But today this Swiss mechanism is the epitome of the micro-mechanical ingenuity, and perhaps, the most prestigious complication in the world of fine watchmaking. Therein lies the value of the tourbillon – it is useful only for a certain occasion. But Corum has created its new Admiral's Cup Legend 42 Flying Tourbillon luxury watch to turn common opinion on its head. Here, the tourbillon carriage is set on the enlarged ceramic ball bearings in order to provide maximum stability. And the movement itself is equipped with stainless steel, instead of typical soft brass, base plate and bridge. The developers have achieved a remarkable visual effect of the tourbillon, which seemingly is floating making one revolution per minute thanks to such properties of stainless steel as stiffness and strength.
The location of the base plate and bridge on the both sides of the mechanism, at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions, gives this impression that the tourbillon is suspended in mid-air - even though it is set on two thin steel arms that are the part of the bridge. Moreover, this piece of designer watches features a retrograde date indicator at the 12 o'clock position. As for the case back of this model, it is covered with a sapphire crystal that shows a panoramic view of the movement. Instead of the usual massive rotor, which blocks the view of the tourbillon, the automatic CO 016 caliber is equipped with a micro-rotor adorned with the brand's logo made of 18 karat red gold. It includes 29 rubies and has power reserve of approximately 72 hours. But the most significant detail, which displays the history of the Admiral's Cup collection of fine watches, is the ring on the dial with 12 nautical pennants. Set as hour markers these pennants are also used as a delicate reminder of the Admiral's Cup maritime heritage. The dodecagonal-shaped case measures 42 mm in diameters and 13 mm in thickness. Its water resistance is up to 50 meters. This luxury watch comes with a black or brown crocodile leather strap and a tongue buckle made of 18 karat red gold.
